Softball Frequently Asked Questions

Ponytail Softball

Who Qualifies?  Girls, League age 7 and 8 (Must be 7 by Dec 31, 2008)

Ponytail is the introduction to the exciting game of Fast Pitch Softball. All games are played at Little League Park on field C.  Games are played on weekday evenings and Saturdays. All games are umpired by local youths. Ponytail uses an 11 inch softball. A pitching machine is used at this level, which allows our coaching staff to concentrate on teaching the fundamentals of the game of Fast Pitch Softball, without the worry of teaching girls to pitch at such a young age. The pitching machine speed is set at 28mph.

Minor League Softball

Who Qualifies?  Girls, League age 9 and 10 (Must be 9 by Dec 31, 2008)

Minor League Fast Pitch Softball is where live pitching is introduced to the game. An 11 inch softball is used in this league.  The Minor League is a developmental league.  It is considered non-competitive and team stats of wins and losses are not recorded by the league. Managers and coaches focus on the fundamentals of the game as well as equal opportunity and play time for all participants. Most Minor League games are umpired by local youth umpires.  All Avon Little League Minor League teams will play a handful of inter-league games with the Elyria Little League Organization during the course of the season. All home games are played at Veterans Park.

Major League Softball

Who Qualifies? Girls, League age 10, 11 & 12 (Must be 10 by Dec 31, 2008)

Major League Fast Pitch Softball is where the competition is turned up.  This league is considered as semi-competitive. These games are umpired by certified adult umpires. Wins and losses are recorded.  This league uses a 12 inch ball and plays all home games at Veterans Park.  All Avon Major League teams play a handful of inter-league games with the Elyria Little League Organization.

Junior League Softball

Who Qualifies? Girls, League age 12, 13 & 14 (Must be 12 by Dec 31, 2008)

Like Major League Softball, the Junior League is considered a competitive Fast Pitch Softball program.  These games are umpired by certified adult umpires. Wins and losses are recorded. All Avon Junior League teams compete with other Junior Leagues of surrounding communities. These cities include (but are not limited to) Elyria, Avon Lake, Westlake, and Sheffield Lake. The Junior League starts later in the season due to many of the same athletes also play High School Softball.  Teams are usually formed in May.

Senior League Softball

Who Qualifies? Girls, League age 15 - 18 (Must be 15 by Dec 31, 2008)

Like Junior League Softball, the Senior League is considered a competitive Fast Pitch Softball program.  These games are umpired by certified adult umpires. Wins and losses are recorded. All Avon Senior League teams compete with other Senior Leagues of surrounding communities. These cities include (but are not limited to) Elyria, Avon Lake, Westlake, and Sheffield Lake. The Senior League starts later in the season due to many of the same athletes also play High School Softball.  Teams are usually formed in May.

League age requirements are a guideline to participation in that respective league.  While you can not “play-up”, you are always welcome to play down if you feel the level of competition may be too intense for your child to participate.
